Our History
In 1867, Josiah Spiers founded the Children’s Special Services Mission after discovering children’s eager response to Bible stories shared on a beach in Wales. This initiative marked a turning point, proving that children could grasp and enjoy God’s word. The mission evolved into Scripture Union in 1961, expanding into schools, camps, and colleges worldwide. By 1879, Anne Marston’s daily readings inspired the global Scripture Union Bible reading notes used today. This movement came to Zimbabwe through Scripture Union South Africa in the 1930s. An S.U. staff worker in the Transvaal called Paul Reed used to make sporadic visits to Zimbabwe by train from Transvaal visiting schools and encouraging local Christians to be involved in the work. The first SU camp was held at Mutambara in Manicaland province in 1945 and was adopted as the year when SU work started in Zimbabwe. After 10 years, in 1955 an SU office was set up with Elizabeth Semple as a full time staff worker. Tony Harlow from UK later joined her. This resulted in the growth of the work and an increase in visibility in schools in a very big way.
